About the Women for Greater Philadelphia
250 Committee

Women for Greater Philadelphia (WFGP) 250 Committee’s mission is to explore and preserve history, create educational programming and activities, and entertain through a series of events to mark the United States of America’s Semiquincentennial, the upcoming 250th anniversary of our Nation, in 2026. Events will continue into 2027.

A major initiative of WFGP 250 Committee is the public opening of the Bicentennial Time Capsule, housed at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania (HSP), in September of 2026. Added to the Time Capsule will be content that reflects the past 50 years prior to its resealing at the close of the Semiquincentennial. This 1976 / 2026 Time Capsule will be opened again during the 2076 Tricentennial. The Bicentennial Time Capsule was created by Women for the Bicentennial (the original name of WFGP) in 1976.

WFGP 250 Committee’s exploration of history will focus on Laurel Hill Mansion and its grounds through storytelling and lectures thus illuminating other historical perspectives and the role of women.

A celebration of Benjamin Franklin’s contributions will be included in the Semiquincentennial programming and activities presented by WFGP.

There will be talks, concerts, a period tea, and special winter holiday decor, tours, and celebrations among the activities, events, and programs WFGP will be creating and hosting.

We start off the festivities on Friday, July 18, 2025 from 6-8 p.m. with the opening reception for Timeline, an exhibition on the grounds of Laurel Hill Mansion, that asks for artists to reflect on the timeline of American history.
