Benjamin Franklin

Women for Greater Philadelphia (WFGP) Presents:
A Celebration of Benjamin Franklin Joseph Siffred Duplessis’s pastel of Benjamin Franklin (1706–1790)

In honor of the nation's 250th anniversary, WFGP will dedicate a full day to celebrating the profound impact of Benjamin Franklin. A visionary in diplomacy, science, industry, and civic engagement, Franklin's ideas continue to shape our world 250 years later.

This immersive event taking place in August of 2026 on Edgely Field will feature interactive exhibits, engaging discussions, and live demonstrations from various Philadelphia institutions that are part of Franklin's legacy to our country. Attendees will explore his pioneering contributions to science and invention, his role in shaping early American diplomacy, his influence on industry and innovation, and his dedication to civic improvement. The event will also highlight Franklin's deep respect for craftsmanship and the trades, as well as the lasting endowments he left to support education and skilled artisans in Philadelphia. We will also address controversial issues such as his history as a slave owner (transitioning into an abolitionist later in life) and his friendly though questionable treaty negotiations with the Lenni Lenape nation.

At a time when leadership and civic virtue are often in question, Franklin's maxims on integrity, industry, and service to the greater good remind us of the enduring principles that strengthen a nation. His wisdom, drawn from Poor Richard's Almanack and his many writings, serves as both a reflection on our past and a call to action for the future. Children and adults will be invited to illustrate the Franklin maxims the day of the event which will be documented for a virtual art exhibition.

As part of the festivities, we invite those who wish to join our event in 18th-century attire, embracing the style and spirit of Franklin's time. This will be a great venue for that niche group of people passionate about 18th century attire. With Laurel Hill mansion as a backdrop, participants in historical dress will help bring the era to life making this celebration a truly immersive experience.
